Gearbox The Beast

Tim and Tom Coronel took on the challenge of the Dakar Rally together in 2018 in 'The Beast' - a rugged, specially built buggy from Jefferies Racing in California. The grueling Dakar Rally demanded the utmost from both man and machine. For the first time, the brothers entered the same vehicle, an impressive, Hummer-like buggy that was entirely constructed to withstand the extremely tough conditions.

Description of the problem

In the early editions of the Dakar Rally with The Beast, a standard 75W-140 transmission oil was used. This resulted in a significant amount of wear particles (iron and copper) in the analyzed oil samples.

Solution

Switching to Eurol Specialty Racing 75W-140 transmission oil resulted in a spectacular reduction of wear. In both situations, the transmission oil was replaced after 6 rally stages. 97.2% less wear was measured after the rally when the transmission oil samples were compared. Furthermore, the gearbox temperature dropped by an average of more than 3°C and €6,140,- was saved.
