Eurol in Dakar 2021 stage 11: Al-Attiyah secures sixth stage win

The second to last stage in the 2021 Dakar Rally was decisive in most categories. Nasser Al-Attiyah took once again a big stage win, but has to settle for second in the general standings.

Nasser Al-Attiyah hit trouble with a puncture, but that didn’t keep him from winning the stage to Yanbu. It was another win for Al-Attiyah, who now looks likely to settle for second in the overall classification. After the stage, Al-Attiyah commented: “It really wasn’t easy. I don’t want to say anything, but I am really happy to be here on day eleven without any technical problems with the car. It’s exactly like last year, we are really struggling with the tyres. I hope for next year there will be better rules for everybody. Sure, there’s still one day left, but this time we have really had a lot of punctures. I’ve had more than sixteen tyres punctured. I am sure that sixteen tyres times one minute and a half each change is a lot. But it's good to make it to here on this Dakar and we are quite happy. We'll see what happens tomorrow.”
Giniel de Villiers has had his fair share of bad luck along the way but did a fine job on Thursday. The South African finished in P6 and made some time on his direct rivals. Shameer Variawa secured another top 20 finish and is one stage away from completing his first Dakar after he had to abandon the race last year.

Martin van den Brink is eyeing his best result ever in the Dakar Rally. After taking it a bit more easy in the last days, Van den Brink has found a good rhythm for the last days of the race. On Thursday Van den Brink finished in P11 with P8 in the overall classification almost safe. Same can be said for Mitchel van den Brink in the Volvo. The rookie is on his way to the finish in the first Dakar as a fully-fledged racing driver.
