Immediately after arriving in the bivouac in Córdoba, Ten Brinke said he would come back to the Dakar. He had an impressive run during the race with his first stage win and lots of top ten finishes. A realistic Ten Brinke said afterwards: “This is a mechanical sport, I experienced this before. We couldn’t do anything. Immediately after the engine failed I knew it was over. I’m sure we’ll be back next year and that we can fight for high positions.”
Jurgen van den Goorbergh said his energy tank was completely empty after an exhausting day “I hoped it would be a walk in the park today, instead it turned out to be the longest day of the Dakar. We left at 5 o’clock in the morning and now it’s 8.45 and it’s getting dark… What a difficult day.” Kees Koolen had troubles on his way to the finish of the 13th stage. Koolen finished 25th after more than nine hours on the quad. Bas Nijen Twilhaar assisted Koolen and came home after a long and tiring stage.
Peter van Merksteijn gained a place in the general classification and is heading for a top-eight finish in his return to the Dakar Rally. Gert Huzink and Steven Rotsaert finished very late in the 13th stage, the same happened to Tim and Tom Coronel.
