Eurol in Dakar: Al-Attiyah takes commanding win in penultimate stage

Nasser Al-Attiyah start the last stage of the 2019 Dakar Rally with an advantage of 51 minutes in the overall classification. The Qatari took a commanding win during a difficult ninth stage around Pisco.

Toyota GAZOO Racing

Defending his overall lead was the main objective for Al-Attiyah during the penultimate stage and he succeeded in that objective. He and co-driver Mathieu Baumel took a commanding win while others hit trouble along the way. With only 112 kilometres to go, Al-Attiyah has a lead of 51 minutes.

Giniel de Villiers was on hand for Al-Attiyah to assist if needed, but the Qatari had a trouble free run. It meant that De Villiers also was able to keep up a high pace during the 313 kilometre long stage. The South-African finished in third place. Bernhard ten Brinke didn’t participate in stage 9, his engine broke down in stage 8.

Mammoet Rallysport

Janus van Kasteren promised another big result after a succesful stage 8. It wasn’t to bef or the Dutchman. He hit trouble early on in stage around Pisco and it took a long time for him and the team to repair the car.

Coronel

Tim and Tom Coronel also hit trouble with only 70 kilometres to go in the penultimate stage of the Dakar Rally. The brothers had power issues and lost loads of valuable time. Before that, they were on course for a potential top 20 finish.

Riwald Dakar Team

Gert Huzink and Ed Wigman completed another tough day at the office after the latter spend the night in the desert after stage 8. The Riwald Dakar Team guys are still in the hunt for a good result in the semi-marathon.
