The Dakar proved tough for the Toyota Gazoo Racing-formation. As always the team aimed very high regarding the chances in the overall classification. Nasser Al-Attiyah did a fine job by winning six stages but came a bit short in the overall. The Qatari finished in P2 and that’s still a mega job considering the challenges he had to overcome along the way.
Shameer Variawa and Giniel de Villiers both had an up and down Dakar, but in the end started to get further ahead in the competition. De Villiers still has a magnificent streak of 18 consecutive finishes in the Dakar. While P8 isn’t what he hoped for, the streak remains very impressive. Variawa finished the Dakar just outside the top-20 but can look back on a useful experience for the future.
The last stage of this year’s Dakar proved a challenge for the Coronel-brothers. They got stuck in the soft sand twice and encountered some technical problems, but as always: Tim and Tom were upbeat when they reached the finish in Jeddah. Now, the guys will put The Beast into the museum and a new challenge will occur next year.
The Mammoet Rallysport team had a historical 2021 Dakar. Martin van den Brink finished in P8 in the overall classification after a straightforward race through the Arabian dunes. Afterwards, Van den Brink was very proud: “This is a great result. We are very happy, this is a reward for the complete team. The last stage was pretty tough, there were some hard parts in this last one.”
Mitchel van den Brink completed his first Dakar as a driver. He finished in P19 overall: “I’m very proud of this, a great result!”
Pascal de Baar was the lone finisher of the Riwald Dakar Team this year. He did a great job by finishing in P11 in the overall classification. De Baar said afterwards it was a ‘text book’ race for him and the team. For De Baar it was his 9th finish in the Dakar Rally.
