Nasser Al-Attiyah wasn’t a happy man after reaching the finish line of stage 6. The Qatari had two punctures and lost a chance to make up time in the overall classification. Despite the hick-ups during this week, Al-Attiyah is still very much a contender for the overall win in the Dakar Rally. The Qatari sits in second right now and thinks he has every chance to win the race. Al-Attiyah said: “Still, we are second overall and next week we will try to do our best. It’s not been an easy week for everybody. A lot of people made mistakes and we are lucky that we didn’t make any big mistakes. Now I’m in a good position, in second place overall and next week will be very important. We’ll try to do our best.”
After the win on Thursday Giniel de Villiers had a hard time to keep up with the high pace on a demanding sixth stage. Despite that, he finished in P8. Shameer Variawa reached the rest day on a high. He recorded a 16th time at the finish line, his best result of this Dakar.
Tim and Tom Coronel have reached the rest day with a P37 in stage 6. Despite some problems, the brothers are still going strong and they are the best classified Dutch participants in the rally.
In the truck category, both teams supported by Eurol are in the hunt for top ten positions in the general standings. Right now Martin van den Brink is on course for a good result. He finished in P8 on Friday and sits in P7 overall. His 18-year old son Mitchel van den Brink had problems early on in the stage. He is still on his way to the bivouac in Ha’il.
Both trucks of the Riwald Dakar Team were represented in the top ten. Pascal de Baar was fastest with P9 while Gert Huzink bounced back from his early retirement with another P10 finish. De Baar gained another place in the general standings and is now in P11
